Email every member of the City Council to let them know that you oppose this project.

The 99-year lease deal was signed the day before Governor Pritzker was in Decatur to sign the SAFE CCS Act, which would have prohibited the sequestration of CO2 under Lake Decatur.  

Contact the Governor's Office to let them know that we need his help in stopping this project.  The IL EPA designated Decatur an Environmental Justice Community, already ranking among the worse in the nation for air quality.

  We cannot handle more air pollution.

Our Illinois Senators and Representatives can influence the IL EPA to hear citizens' concerns and not just corporations' greenwashing proposals.

The effects of this project do not stop at Decatur city borders, nor should the political process.  Contact your county board member (or all of them) and tell them to get involved in stopping this project.

Local issues have the most impact on our day-to-day lives, so it matters who we put in local elected offices.  This project would have never made it this far under leadership that is working for the interest of the community, rather than for large corporations.  Know your options and VOTE like our city and county depend on it, because it does!

The City of Decatur did not do a financial analysis of this project, including anticipated tax revenue and what the project is going to cost the citizens in water infrastructure, emergency response capabilities, public health costs, etc.  [source]

This depends on the source.  

Low Carbon Infra (parent company of Broadwing Energy, LLC) reports that " it will create about 1,000 construction jobs and two dozen permanent jobs." [source]

While the City of Decatur says the "project would support an estimated 750 construction jobs, and dozens of permanent, well-paying jobs once the plant is operating." in one atricle [source] and in another says " the developer anticipates supporting 30 full-time, well-paying jobs" [source]

There is no guaratee that the constuction jobs will be filled by Macon County residents or that the full time positions created after construction will have a Decatur or Macon County residency reqirement. 

It can take 1,000 years or more for CO2 stored in a saline aquifer to become inert, and no developer/operator can guarantee it will permanently remain underground. [source]

It is hard to predict this.  You likely will not see a huge change in property values unless there is an environmental disaster from the project, such as an uncontrollable leak or major issues that render the area not worth the risk for investment.  A large leak involving the lake water being poisoned and rendered unusable would also be a major issue for the area, therefore driving property values down. 

Due to this project being the first of its kind in scale, there is not much information online about this.  We strongly encourage you to contact your insurance company and ask about how incidents would be covered.   

Until this point, it has primarily been used in order to extract more oil from wells.  This project is the first time it has ever been done at this scale, really upping the possible fallout from an incident.

No.  The vast majority of the electricity generated by this facility will be purchased by Google for its AI data centers.  ADM will use a smaller portion for their operations. [source]

At the 2/2/26 City Council meeting, the council voted to split the cost of a new sanitary sewer lift station with Broadwing.  This will cost taxpayers $12 million.  All council members voted in favor of this Development Agreement between Decatur and Broadwing Energy, LLC, except for Councilwoman Cruz, who opposed this agreement. The city has not done any work on assessing the costs of emergency repsonse capabilities, public health costs, monitoring, or any other fascit of supporting the realities of this project. [source]

This is currently unknown.  The City Council is hiring a firm to figure this out.  At this meeting, one of the councilmembers presented numbers that at max usage, the largest users use ~95% of the current capacity.  This does not include the Fuyao expansion as the city currently does not have requements from Fuyao.  The City Manager said that the city is looking at expanding the current water treatment facility.  It is unclear how funds will be generated for this project.
